About Re-Adoption
Though re-adoption (going through the adoption process again through the State of California system) is not required in California (the State of California recognizes adoptions that are officially processed in a foreign country and approved by the U.S. INS), the benefits of re-adoption include 1.) officially changing her name (Emily’s current official name is her full Chinese name), 2.) the creation of a State of California issued birth certificate with Emily new name, and 3.) the clarification of Emily’s inheritance rights should something happen to Susan and I (since there will be documentation in a California court file that Emily is definitely our daughter with full inheritance rights).
